Is Google Local Services Ads worth it for UK trades?

By Dylan Bartie, Founder of DrivnLast updated

They can be, if your trade is covered in your area and you can answer calls quickly. Local Services Ads appear prominently in Google Search and charge per lead rather than per click, which suits urgent local jobs. They suit you less if you often miss calls, or need control over keywords and landing pages.

What are Google Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads are a separate ad format from normal Google search ads. Instead of writing ads and choosing keywords, you set up a profile with your services, area, hours and reviews, and Google shows it prominently when people nearby search for what you do. Google's UK getting started page describes them as a way to receive leads directly from potential customers.

Before your ads run, Google carries out verification checks, which vary by category. Depending on the category, your profile can also show a badge such as Google Guaranteed or Google Verified.

How am I charged for Local Services Ads?

Per lead, not per click. Google's guide on how leads work says calls, messages and voicemails from customers can count as leads, and that leads judged invalid or low quality when the customer first gets in touch are not charged. You set a budget and a bid, and Google's bidding guide says your bid is the most you are willing to pay for a lead, though you may pay less.

One detail matters in the UK. Google's page on automated lead credits says those credits aren't available to advertisers in EMEA, which includes the UK. So a poor-quality lead that slips through is less likely to be refunded automatically than it would be in the US.

When are Local Services Ads worth it for a trade?

They tend to suit trades where people search when something needs fixing and want someone to call now. A lead is a real person who chose to contact you, which can make results easier to judge than clicks.

  • Your service is offered as a Local Services category in your area. Check on Google's sign-up page before planning around it.
  • Someone can answer the phone during the hours you set. Missed calls can still count as leads.
  • You already have genuine reviews, because they help your profile stand out.
  • You know roughly what a job is worth, so you can tell whether a lead price makes sense.

How do I get more from Local Services Ads?

Treat the profile like a shop window. Google's bidding guide says higher-quality profiles, including those with images, may rank higher and may pay lower costs per lead. In practice that means:

  • Complete every section of the profile, and keep your hours and service areas accurate.
  • Add real photos of your work and your team.
  • Answer calls and messages quickly, and call back missed ones the same day.
  • Ask happy customers for reviews, so new ones keep arriving.
  • Switch off services you don't want leads for, so you aren't paying for the wrong jobs.

When are normal Google search ads a better fit?

Standard Google search ads give you more control. You choose the exact searches, write the ad, and send people to a specific page on your website. That suits planned, higher-value work, like a new kitchen, an extension or a full rewire, where customers read before they call.

Many businesses test both. Our guide to Meta ads vs Google ads covers how to choose a starting point when the budget is small.

Is anything changing with Local Services Ads?

Yes. Google has announced that Local Services Ads are moving into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. Its timetable starts with the US in 2026, with non-US accounts, including the UK, scheduled for 2027. Google says advertisers will still pay per valid lead, and ads will still show only on Google Search and Maps.

If you start now, expect the way you manage budgets and reports to change during that move. Save your reports before the switch, because Google says performance reports don't carry over.

What should I check before starting?

The basics that affect every lead you pay for:

  • A complete, verified Google Business Profile with the same details as your website.
  • A clear idea of which jobs you want and which you don't, so you can choose your services accurately.
  • A way to track which leads became paying jobs, so you judge the ads on work won, not enquiries alone.
  • A website that backs up your profile, because many people check it before they call.
